Midnight Oil Creative

Midnight Oil Creative creates standees, key art, promotional giveaways, and store displays for a wide range of film, tech, and manufacturing clients. I’ve been working with them for several years as a pinch-hitter in many different capacities, from campaign conceptualizing to tagline writing to marketing pieces. My vivid descriptions of their work contributed to award-winning turns in several major marketing contests, including Best in Show at the 2011 OMAs and Best Theatrical Standee and Limited Edition Packaging at The Hollywood Reporter‘s 2011 Key Art Awards. The samples below are from contest entries I wrote for the 2012 Key Art awards.

Mobile Roadie

Mobile Roadie is an innovative app-creation tool that has been used by everyone from Taylor Swift to the Miami Dolphins. They wanted a short, attention-grabbing video that would entice viewers to explore their service further. I came up with the concept and wrote the script for this piece, which was shot and animated by my friends at Roger LA.

LAgraphico

LAgraphico is a pretty awesome place. In their giant airplane-hangar sized offices in Burbank, they print, engineer, and design incredible displays, posters, and promotional items for clients from film studios to airlines to consumer electronics companies. There’s something immensely satisfying about working for a place that actually makes physical objects. I don’t get to be part of the making process, but I do get to use my writing talents to make the things they make sound good on their website and in news releases. I’m hoping if I stick around long enough, someday they’ll teach me how to operate the die-cut machine.

Tron: Legacy / NAE

Before Tron: Legacy entered theaters, Disney teamed up with the National Academy of Engineering to create an exhibit at the USA Science and Engineering Expo on the National Mall in Washington D.C. The exhibit explored the role of engineering in Tron: Legacy. I wrote the signage for the exhibit, all of which served the dual purpose of promoting the film and getting visitors excited about engineering.

The Family Channel

The Family Channel, a Canadian children’s network, was shopping around for a new look. The companies who pitched to them had some nice graphics, but no one could explain the strategy behind what they were doing. Enter design firm Roger LA, with a pitch and strategy book created by yours truly. After presenting this book to the client, Roger won the pitch, a $500K+ job. I like to think my pretty words were responsible for at least 99% of their success, give or take a few thousandths of a percent.

MySpace

There was a time not too long ago when MySpace ruled the Internet. Sadly, they’ve gone through some tough times lately, and needed to refresh their image. Working with Roger LA, I wrote a pitch book with suggestions about how to improve the MySpace user experience. As a result, MySpace sent its nearest competitor, Facebook, into bankruptcy, and is today the preeminent social networking site on the planet. All of this is true except for that last part.

Eco-Artware

Eco-Artware is an online store that sells artistic and environmentally-conscious products. I have written several product descriptions for the site for products like the Recycled Stained-Glass Gift Heart and the 45 rpm Record Mirror. I have also written articles about environmental artists for Eco-Artware’s online newsletter, Recycling Rag.

Barnes and Noble

Barnes and Noble needed biographies for their website, and I needed a paycheck. A winning combination! I contributed several bios of well-known authors for their “Meet the Writers” section, including David Liss, Frank Delaney, and Orson Scott Card.

Roger LA

As you may have guessed from previous items, I often work with Roger LA, an LA based motion-graphics and production studio. In addition to working on pitches and other materials, I have written many of the job descriptions on their websites. You can take a look at some of these descriptions below.
