Polytheistic societies have less of a concept of "blasphemy," and thus the Oracle had more of an ability to *take advantage* of human nature. I think our ability, as a *group*, to predict human nature has vastly improved. It's just more frowned upon to take advantage of that than it was 3000 years ago.
