Funny - I read halfway through this and IM'ed my brother to say your blog is too depressing - and then I get to the end and see you mention jumping out of a window. So at least you know when you're being depressing. Guess I do better with the happy "fluff" in my stamp-blogging world - too much reality over here......! ;-)

I just saw something crazy while trying to make sure I wasn't full of crap for my reply to your reply to my blog.

Did you know we can send "gifts" to the Bureau of the Public Debt to help pay it down? That's just weird. I wonder if anyone ever does that.

On the crisis... I'm still in the "this administration is too incompetent for such schemes" camp. I don't think they've gotten the conceits they've gotten because they're diabolical. I think our wuss Congress and press were afraid to look Un-American(TM), and let them get away with things that they shouldn't... but I really don't think it was all part of a grand scheme. So it isn't that we're giving money to diabolical masterminds; we're giving it to buffoons. I think I'd prefer the masterminds.

That said... supposedly (according to the pundits and such) Hank Paulson is a non-moron in this administration. In any case, I don't think it took pre-planning to know how much we need and what we need it for; we need to buy the packages of imaginary money floating around the system, which we've known were there but people kept hoping would somehow turn into real money (and not entirely crazily; that's what the stimulus package back in the winter was supposed to help with, although obviously that was another incompetent solution).
